My personal brief was to illuminate the idea of the magnetic North Star (the Pole Star or Polaris) that diverges by varying degrees over time from the 'True North' on maps...
The basis for this artwork was a 2ft x 1ft sheet of 'obscured' fluted glass (such as is used for bathroom windows). Various layers of differently coloured tissue paper were overlaid on it to 'mix' new colours (ie different reds & blues to make purples...) and stuck down with clear acrylic medium - the only place left uncovered is the 8 degree angle between True and Magnetic North...
The writing is hand done again, and the lone star is similar to the inclusion of the North Star on the Nunavut Innuit territory, and the flag of Alaska...
The artwork was backlit to be photographed for a high quality transparencies for the printers to scan...
A PR item that never saw the light of day had four slightly different transparencies printed on perspex and arranged as a cube and illuminated from within - like a lampshade...
