brief / approach

...I only had an afternoon to do this in - a short time even by Stiff's definition of a rush job...

...the brief was to supply a 7" single label artwork for a very limited edition release of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll - for the New Musical Express' fast upcoming Xmas Party - using whatever photos of Ian Dury we had available - as there was no time for a photo session...

...the main probelm was this was in the early days before we had a professional design studio Process Camera  - essential for doing all the  photographic bits for artwork  - in the Stiff art department...

  ...Instead we had to send all our imagery  stuff out to be photo-mechanically converted - so it could be 'pasted up' in the artwork - out to the typesetters, along wit h the instructions for how we wanted a job's text & headlines to appear - all  supplied back asap so we could do up the artwork for the printers...

...consequently I just drew the picture of Ian for the label - based on some recent live pix - and then added all the lettering by hand - happy daze...
