This shot by Brian Griffin was taken in a back alley not far from the Stiff offices in Camden I think... Brian used a translucent umbrella and ring light to light Lene. The illumination down the alley is a street light and an entrance light to a building...
The blurred shot is a different image taken at a slower shutter speed - there's also a picture disc version shot. This was the second time I won a 'Cover of the year' award (the first being the 'Akron' cover).
The lettering is hand-drawn, made to look like futuristic TV screen-style lettering - at the time anything like computer lettering was really modern..!
This is a kind of purgatory because she's got away from Eastern Europe but what is she? Stateless. Not so much 'on the run' but still having to hide - this was ten years before the Berlin wall came down...
There was a 'radio interview' album (recorded in the same session, and sent to radio stations) where you can learn how - ficticiously - she came to the UK. Lene thought the whole back story thing was great fun...
